Modern desks, the choice of materials

Desks used to be imposing pieces of furniture, often associated with solid wood and luxury. Today they are much more versatile to support the needs of contemporary clients, regarding dimensions, use and space available.

An office or study furnished in a modern style will often call for a glass and steel writer desk, or a similar piece of furniture with light, clean and essential lines. The coldness of glass, much appreciated in minimalistic settings, can be replaced with a warmer, more welcoming lacquered top, especially with an open-pore finish that enhances the natural grain of the wood while tinting it with the colour that best matches its surroundings. The combination of natural wood and lacquer within the same piece is very popular and able to evoke both industrial style, with dark hues contrasting with wood, and the lighter Nordic designs, characterised by the mix of white lacquer with light wood.

Solid wood desks remain very popular, revered by those who prefer the old-fashioned elegance of classic furniture. They are usually embellished by small accessories such as lamps or paperweights or paired with an elegant leather armchair. Equally beloved is the combination of a light lacquered top with a large wrought-iron or golden or silver metal frame: a mix of colours and shapes capable of bringing back as much to the discreet luxury of provencal or shabby-chic style as to the timeless lines of art déco.
